A Fresh Look For Spring

It looks as if spring has arrived for good in the San Francisco Bay Area--what could be a better time for a fresh start? This vintage wicker bassinette is just the thing for new beginnings.

The twin to the 1920's nightstand that flew out the door in December has made an appearance--this version has a fresh and pretty reproduction glass knob.

This brass tilt mirror has been given a fresh new coat of paint, giving it a new life for a new home. Be sure to stop by and feel the freshness!

A Red and White Table for Valentine's Day

It isn't too soon to start thinking about Valentine's Day. A red and white table is a sure fire way to bring drama into a winter-dark room.

We have a large array of vintage "Pink" Willow dishes, snowy white linens and doilies of all kinds.

Etched antique crystal goblets are perfect for a romantic dinner for two but we have enough for a larger gathering, as well.

However, we carry limited quantities of most things so if there is something you like, such as this pair of Leonard's silverplate goblets, be sure to stop by and snatch it up.

A favorite piece is this vintage Safe-Bake casserole dish adorned with cupids, hearts and arrows. Can't you just see a chocolate souffle in this delicious heart-shaped glass confection?

What could be prettier on a gloomy winter's day than lots of red and white? We are decked out for Valentine's Day here at Dunhaven Place and chock full of some new pieces, all shabby and chippy and white.
This adorable child sized vintage china hutch/cabinet is adorned with basket of flowers drawer pulls and features plate grooves on the shelves for all those little tea sets.

This kitchen cupboard features a utensil drawer, a breadboard, lots of storage and is made up of two pieces making it easy to transport.

Our newest addition is this corner cupboard, a former built-in, with original depression glass pulls and adjustable shelves.

It's cold outside but we can't complain--after all, we prayed for rain!

We have new store hours and they are easier to remember than ever! We are open Weds-Sat from 10-5. However, we can open by appointment for anyone wishing to make an actual purchase. Many of our items are advertised on Craigslist--just search "dunhaven place".

One of our brand new pieces is this gorgeous Victorian-era drop leaf desk. It is chock full of special details such as the handles carved to look like leather straps, the beautiful drawer fronts, the carved curves--the list goes on and on! This is an antique but it has a very contemporary appeal and could serve so many functions. Be sure to stop by to see it and our other treasures here at Dunhaven Place!

Ever since we opened in April of this year, I have been excited to decorate the store for my favorite time of the year! The trees are up, loaded with special hard to find ornaments and my favorite color scheme, pink and green, is at play.

Come in and see our selection of ornaments, home decor, items for gift giving and something unique and one of a kind, just for you.

We have two dozen consignors who bring in all sorts of treasures on a regular basis so be sure to check back often. Please note that we will be open from 8 am to 8 pm on Black Friday as well as the Saturday following.

What's New at Dunhaven Place?

Did you know that Dunhaven Place carries new items as well as old, vintage and antique? We also like to create new pieces out of the old. A perfect example is this gray-washed vintage cane back chair--it has been given a fresh lease on life with the applied antique wooden pieces and a crisp gray linen seat. It's a one of a kind piece you will find only at Dunhaven Place.

The following dresser is what you might call a double bow front chest of drawers--it has tons of fabulous detail and a gorgeous patina.

The following dresser is part of the same bedroom set. Very unique--we feel lucky to be able to carry these items at Dunhaven Place.

Though this chair isn't new (in fact, it's fairly ancient) but is is new to us. We LOVE the items enrobed in their original chippy paint--Bertha the Witch seems to appreciate it, as well.

We just received a collection of vintage Wilton Armetale wine and water goblets--12 of each! These haven't been put out yet but if you are determined to have these for your Halloween party or Medieval supper, ask to have them brought out of the back room.

The following item--set of four vintage maple chairs by Salem House with fresh new coats of black paint--is so new that three of them are still waiting for their new paint job. We also have a matching armchair. Whether you want a set of black chairs for your kitchen table or a wonderful Salem-style-witch black armchair for your front porch for the fall holiday season, these are the chairs for you.

Lastly, the deadline to enter the FB "like" contest is over at midnight Oct. 14th/Oct. 15th (basically, in the middle of the night between Friday and Saturday) with the winner of the drawing to be announced Saturday. It's Halloween at Dunhaven Place

Need a place for vintage-style, one of a kind Halloween decorations? From our Bethany Lowe decor to our one of kind hand made items, Dunhaven Place has what you're looking for.

Our handmade banners bearing the words "Spooky" or "Wicked" are made using a font inspired by Guy Fawke's signature after being tortured for his part in the Gunpowder Plot in 1500's England. Spooky . .. .

Our hand decorated dolls each hold a hand carved pumpkin in their laps--the Witch is Bertha, the gal in Thanksgiving attire is Abigail and Cassandra is quite festive in her black and orange checked shawl.

Imagine a copper cauldron full of hot cider by the fire or a row of paper lanterns in the shape of witches hats warming up the chilly night!

And for the intrepid type who need something a little different for a costume this year, be sure to check out the Victorian Riding Hats complete with black netting and a row of skeletons.

We have lots of new, fun goodies, including this charming display of incense. Each tube contains incense and a reed tray to burn it on. The packaging is a treat in an of itself. These are produced by a company owned and run by a 1980's pop icon but you have to come into the store and ask to whom it is I am referring.

Or more! In these pages, you can find what you are looking for and thereby help us to understand exactly what it is you want.

In these pages you can look for color inspiration and make sure we know just what color you want your piece of furniture to be.

The pictures cover a wide range of styles which can help you express yours to better advantage.

Re-purposing Vintage Finds for the Way We Live Now

If you love light in the garden at night as much as I do, you most likely adore lanterns like I do, too. I'm drawn to them like a moth to fire and, these days, they are everywhere you look. Still, I'm not so crazy about the price so I'm always looking for ways to bring the romantic glow of candle-light into my environment--for less.

The other night I thought about all of the little mis-matched pieces of china left over from my tea cup garden project and, viola!, magical tiny porcelain lanterns appeared in my yard.

I am mesmerized by the soft glow of the light through the porcelain, a substance that is made to withstand hot temperatures which makes them entirely safe for votive candles. They are also safe to sit on most any surface.

Using beautiful items in ways they were not originally intended is a lovely way to bring vintage style into the modern world. In my home, a cake stand becomes the perfect place to display a small stack of linens, a table-cloth becomes a bedspread and a small vase becomes a pencil cup for my desk. So, it was with this thought in mind that I re-purposed a chandelier-style hanging votive into a posy vase.

Re-purpose, re-cycle, rescue and live with the things you love.

Folk Art Fun with Audrey Eclectic

Here at Dunhaven Place, we love the artistry of Audrey Eclectic. I first encountered her work on the blog of a friend and I was instantly smitten. When I decided to open my little store, I knew I had to have some of her work so I perused her website and fell in love with these wonderful Belle Marie plates--only they were in black and white. She kindly agreed to give them some color, making us the exclusive retailer of Belle Marie plates and matching mugs in these lovely pastel hues. Recently I asked, Heather, the talent behind Audrey Eclectic if she would consent to be interviewed for this blog and again, she very kindly consented.

How did you get started with your painting?

My little art business, Audrey Eclectic, started in the fall of 2007. Nov.1 was my first day free from my job as an assistant editor at a small town newspaper and I planned to stay home and care for our daughter, Audrey, who was about 8 months old at the time. Of course it didnt take long for me to feel like I needed to 'do' something after being a 9-5er for the past few years, and I was sort of sick to death of dishes and laundry ;) so i took up painting, something that I loved to do in my spare moments, while my daughter napped or slept at night.

At first it was purely for my own entertainment, but later I opened an etsy shop. And when I did, I needed a business name. Taking inspiration from my little Audrey, I called it 'Audrey Eclectic.' A few months later I signed up to do a little local craft show and ended up winning their gallery exhibit there which lead to me getting a solo showing at a local coffee shop. It seemed like every little step led to something else and another opportunity and possibility. Today I do several well-loved shows around the area, have done several group and solo gallery exhibits and have been published in magazines such as Somerset Studio, Prims, Somerset Home and the book Sharing Stitches by Chrissie Grace.

I just love painting and drawing, and it is just so wonderful and amazing that the things that I love and that inspire me also speak to others. I love when my art is treasured and finds its forever home, or becomes the perfect gift for someone's dear friend, mother, daughter, husband, etc. I love having that connection with people through my creations, and its often the start of great friendships.

(Custom painting Heather did of Ginny Delacourt, the heroine of my Jane Austen-era romantic comedies published by Avalon books--I was thrilled!)

Tell us about the darling dishes you paint:

I started my line of handpainted dishes this spring when I began experimenting with ceramic paints and I have been so blown away by the response. Each piece I make is hand crafted and one of a kind, there's always some little something that makes each piece unique. The dishes lend themselves so well to the indulgences and decadence of days gone by, and so some of my favorite subjects to paint are Regency Era England (think Jane Austen) or Imperial France (Hello, Marie Antoinette!)

Incidentally, several of my dishes are set to appear in the upcoming issue of Somerset Home, which hits news stands nationwide on Aug. 1. I am so pleased with the feature and how well they show off the dishes.

It's my hope that each little something that I make finds a home where it is treasured and loved. No matter if its just a little something pretty to look at, or a more utilitarian piece of art, each piece is made with thought and imagination and most of all, love.

Our Tea Cup Garden Flowers

Come into the store today and get first crack at our tea cup flowers, garden beauties planted in vintage pieces of china. (The little pitcher is new but we're not going to quibble about that.) Drainage holes have been carefully drilled to allow for proper drainage. Put them out in the garden (they shouldn't get too much sun or they will dry out too quickly) or in the windowsill for a spot of vintage color.

Here at Dunhaven Place we strive to carry anything and everything that will enhance the beauty of your home including new, used, antique and reproduction items. Second hand is twice as nice and we currently have in stock items made by Royal Albert, Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn, Reed and Barton, Leonard, Bauer, Royal Doulton and Hartstrings, as well as brand spanking new items by Rachel Ashwell, Yankee Candle, Bethany Lowe, Christie Repasy and Audrey Eclectic. We also carry gift items and pride ourselves on our array of hand made and one of a kind treasures created by local artisans including the hand quilted tote bags stitched by talented seamstress Nancy Werner.

Nancy hand pieces these totes using fabric she has collected over the years. She didn't pick up quilting until ten years ago but began selling her hand sewn items, including cloth clowns, when she was in the third grade. Over the years she has made clothes for herself and her children, stitched up countless curtains and tablecloths and participated in a boutique for many years. Nancy still owns the original hand crank sewing machine on which she first learned to sew including the box it came in. She also has the first foot treadle she used. When she started quilting, she found that she adored the look of a quilt square over a tablecloth and has made many over the years. One day a friend suggested she try the quilted totes so she bought a pattern (which she modified) and the rest is history. Nancy's beautiful and functional one of a kind totes can be found exclusively at Dunhaven Place.
